High School Woes

Back when I was a sophomore in high school,  I had gone for my drivers test, this is relevant later in the story.  I was extremely nervous as usual, but managed to pass. I was excited to start driving since I like cars. Cars are a passion to me, and everyone who knows me, knows that. Later in that year it became fall and then turned to winter. The winter was harsher than last year’s winter, and being a novice driver to the snow I was a little worried. Even so, I still drove as much as I could, I have a friend who is in the same boat as me, just got his license and was new to driving in the winter time. Difference is he has a truck and I have a car, though it is a Subaru and has a good all wheel drive system.

There was supposed to be a big snowstorm on Thursday which was exciting for all of the students because unbeknownst to us, we will have to make up the day come June. Well come Thursday, school ends up being canceled due to the, 8 inches of snow that we are supposed to receive. I decided I wanted to go for a drive once the snow started falling slower, and once a few plow trucks went by.  I went to go get food at a local shop, to take back home, though it was a hilly curvy route that if you’re not careful you could easily end up in a ditch. I started off great, and made it halfway to my destination.

Then I went too fast for a turn. I slid into a snowbank, the car was totally fine, there was no damage. The problem is that the car was stuck and wouldn’t reverse. There was virtually no one on the road so no one stopped. They were probably smart enough to stay home unlike me. I didn’t have to call my dad because he would have been very mad, so I decided to call my friend who owns a truck, to which he laughed and said he’ll be right over to see if he can pull the car out. It took him a while to get to the corner. But once he got there, he said he had a tough enough time getting traction also in the snow storm. We wondered how we could get the car out as quickly as possible, like pushing, or digging the front out, but we didn’t have shovels so we decided to use a rope he had in the bed of his truck. We looked for a tow hook location on my car, which was hidden under the rear bumper. We pulled it out of the snow bank, it took only like 5 minutes to get it out. I checked it out some more just to make sure it was fine. After I deemed it to be fine I thanked my friend and offered to pay him, but he declined the offer. So instead of continuing down the road to get food, I just turned around and went back home, before I had an actual accident. Once I got home I just made food and was bored for the rest of the day.

This story is later repeated with the same friend. Later in the year this time Junior year, it was winter time again. This winter was more mild though. School was canceled once again due to 5 inches of snow. My same friend decided it was his turn to do what I did.

I received a text around mid-day from him. He told me he got bored and wanted to go to Dunkin Donuts, when he got to a bend in the road he went off the road in his truck. I asked him if he was okay and if there is any damage to his truck he replied, “I’m fine, but the truck has a scratch on the front” and it was still “totally drive able”. I told him I would be on my way to see what I could do to help. I also told him I would go and get a few shovels to dig him out. I couldn’t imagine my car having enough power to pull a truck out of a ditch, since it could barely get out of its own way.

I left my house carefully to try and not make the same mistake twice. The roads were slippery because plow trucks did not get the memo it snowed and haven’t plowed the roads yet. Mind you it was about 1:50 in the afternoon. When I finally arrived I was also laughing because I know how embarrassing that is, and asked if I could try to pull his truck out just to see if my car could do it, and he and I laughed because the thought of a car pulling out a truck was funny. To our surprise, the Subaru was able to pull the truck far enough out of the snow bank, that he could reverse the rest of the way. Once that had happened we disconnected the ropes. I handed the ropes back to him, he went to his truck and offered money in return. But I turned down the money because he had done the same for me earlier. Since he was close to Dunkin Donuts he told me he was still determined to make it. Besides the rest of the road was not curvy, and he would just have to be more careful. Especially on the way back because it is mostly uphill, and his tires didn’t seem all that great.

We still laugh about our driving mistakes when we think back to those accidents, but we are glad that they didn’t end worse, because we could have easily totaled our vehicles in an accident. Atleast in the future we can still look back to when we were stupid high schoolers who crashed into snowbanks and laugh about it.

I have definitely made this mistake but more recent and about a month after I got my license. I was turning a corner in the snow and my car didn’t turn and I want of the road into the snow back but my car was damaged because the snowbank was ice hard and I was an hour away from everybody I knew so a random guy had to help me. I definitely know the feeling though and yes it is very embarrassing.
