Dunkin Donuts and Lobster Fudge: MBaldwin23

The red background of MBaldwin23’s AVATAR caught my attention as I wrote down the symbols within the square. While it was simple, the color and the small image of an orange cup meant multiple things. I can’t really describe MBaldwin23 as we’re not the closest, so I feel like roughly describing her from what I see with just my eyes would not be entirely accurate even though I do sit somewhat across from her. I am also very shy and didn’t quite know how to go up to her to ask questions about herself. However what I’ve seen in class is that she’s quiet, works hard, and speaks up when asked hard-thinking questions. 

In MBaldwin23’s AVATAR, the object that caught my eye the most was the ominous cup from what I presumed to be from Dunkin Donuts, solely because of the orange color. Also because it’s a very popular chain throughout New England. When asked what the Dunkin Donuts cup symbolized, because it was a Dunkin Donuts cup, MBaldwin23’s enthusiastic answer was, “because it’s really good”. MBaldwin23 also answered, “when with friends we always get a coffee which is something we bond over.”. I asked MBaldwin23 when the tradition of her and her friends getting DD coffee started and she replied “Anytime we’d go shopping or just hang out.” which seems like a good way to spend time with your friends. 

Of course, the Dunkin donuts cup isn’t the only thing that has a double meaning. Red is also prominently displayed as the background color. MBaldwin23 said it’s a “mix between lobster and apples” and lucky for her it’s apple picking season, especially at Wallingford’s. When questioned about the further meanings of why apple and lobster, MBaldwin23 said she goes to “Bar Harbor and always takes a picture in front of a famous ice cream and fudge shop with lobster and visit Acadia National Park” while there. I think red is a great color for a background because red is a very eye-catching color proven by science and people will definitely ask her about her choice of it when their eyes catch the deep scarlet. 

What I noticed about both MBaldwin23’s AVATAR and mine is that we both have traditions with the people we hold close as well as going to the ocean during late spring/early summer. However, while my AVATAR displays the ocean out-right, MBaldwin23 has more thought behind it, referencing the color associated with the lobster stand in Bar Harbor, Maine. With my AVATAR I also had the color red in mind using it for three roses which symbolized love which is similar to MBaldwin23’s choice of red and visiting places with the people she holds close. The last thing I noticed MBaldwin23 and I had in common was the love for going apple picking which I recently did last weekend. I think, all in all, MBaldwin23 really thought her AVATAR through and although it was fairly simple- each color and symbol had twice the meaning behind them and thought than just a pretty background and common baked goods and coffee chain.
