Mistakes Were Made

Everyone on earth makes mistakes some are big some are small. Mine was terminal and metaphorically almost cost me a year of my finite life. In the years 2021 and 2022, I was in my junior year of high school. I decided to make habits that would defiantly not benefit my future.

People always say that your junior year of high school is the toughest year in high school, but it ended up being the hardest year in my so far-lived life. I had a decent start to the year, getting stuff done on time and turning in good work. But by the end of the first month, I had already developed what people say is “senioritis”, it’s a lack of motivation that comes with your last year of high school. Since I was only a junior, It’s just called being lazy. I had one of my closest friends in most of my classes, he had suffered from laziness in every aspect of school his entire life. We ended up becoming closer and screwing off in class, this consisted of playing a game on our phones that we both enjoyed and going on social media during class. This made it very easy to not pay attention or do work and was really the first factor in the development of my laziness.

It wasn’t the lack of work inside of school that was messing me up, hypothetically someone could do all their work as homework. But I had a contrary mindset and had absolutely no motivation to do anything at home. At the time I had cross-country taking up over two hours of my time after school and would leave me with no energy when I got home. But the better contributor was my job. I was working four to six-hour shifts in the kitchen in Lewiston during the winter. I absolutely despised it and made me hate my life, and that defiantly did not motivate me to do my schoolwork. The end of the school year was coming and I was behind in almost all my essential classes. For example, for the better part of the school year, I was reading and working on three different books in English. At this point in the year, my friend in class had been moved to alternative education, which meant I was alone in most of my classes. When I was presented with the possibility of not getting credit and having to retake the classes, I knew I had to admit my mistakes, that I was wrong, and do my best to fix them. I ended up passing English III by the skin of my teeth.

Even though I still passed, I could undoubtedly see the lesson to take away from this. It’s that in life, you get out what you put in. In the beginning, when I put nothing into school I got nothing in return, but when I put my head down and grinded I was rewarded with a passing grade along with a great sense of accomplishment. ”
