I believe social media is more of a good thing than a bad thing. Social media is great for sharing pictures, events, or selling items. Although just like anything, social media can be misused and used to hurt others. People regularly scroll through Instagram or Facebook to see updates from friends and family or just to see some funny memes or cat pictures. I definitely look at several cat pictures a day but cat pictures aren’t hurting anybody even if it momentarily distracts them.
There are also times when social media may not be all that great. A time when social media might not be good is when you have an addiction to your phone and you need to get work done. In that case, social media isn’t the problem it’s having good self-control and working on ways to concentrate on the task at hand. Another way social media can be abused is by people using it as a negative platform. There is a select part of the population that uses social media in all the wrong ways like spreading hate, exposing somebody and their business, or telling someone or a group of people to do horrible things.
With that being said there will always be those who abuse social media as a tool to hurt but the majority of people who use social media use it properly and can still enjoy it even with trolls trying to ruin it. For example, I can accurately say I look at social media at least once or twice a day and it doesn’t deter me from doing any activities I need to get done. If I’m avoiding doing something I don’t even need to look at my phone, if I find a good old ceiling to stare at I’m all good. The closest light source is also a good attention grabber but either way, I would say my phone distracts me less than normal objects do like the ceiling or lights. If I can sit in vacation school with my phone next to me the whole time and remain focused I don’t believe social media is the real blame for distraction. I think it all depends on what’s on your mind, how much self-restraint one has, and how motivated one is to focus on specific tasks.
Overall I’ve concluded that social media is not evil or the enemy but the strength of concentration in the mind is the real burden that is run into. Those with less left restrain should try some different strategies to help focus on the task at hand like putting their phone in the next room or listening to music while they work.
