As people grow up technology tends to become more and more present in their lives. Whether it be in their personal or professional life there usually is some form of technology involved. Definitely in the world today many people rely on phones for communication and as the years progress more and more advancement keep being made to make it easier to communicate with others.
I remember when I first started at my job and they said they’d give me a call. I got very nervous because I didn’t know how to talk on the phone. Throughout past years my mom would say “do you really not know how to talk on a phone? Seriously, come on what are you going to do when you’re trying to get a job?” and I’d respond with something smart that might’ve gotten me into a tiny bit of trouble. But I never took the time to learn so when I got that first call it was extremely awkward and not very professional. I still ended up with the job so I couldn’t have been that bad but it still was probably something that I should have learned to do at a younger age. This just comes to show that unless people are exposed to talking on the phone it’s more likely for it to be harder for them when it comes time where they need to. After doing it a few times it became easier but when the situation changes it gets tough again. The first time when the phone rang at self checkout i didn’t pick it up cause i was too nervous to have to talk on the phone but i picked up the next time so that’s progress.
I had never been exposed to it before in either aspect of my life so when it first popped up I was spooked for sure. I got the hang of it pretty quickly although I still find it really awkward but there has definitely been some improvement.
In my personal life I am a big fan of texting. The occasional call with a friend is alright but other than that I don’t really enjoy it. Most of the time what’s said in a call could have been sent as a text and its meaning would have been just as effective. My assistant manager at work texts me about stuff at work and the schedule and I absolutely love it and I am a huge fan of her for that reason. It proves that texting can be done effectively in many situations.
When talking on the phone there are some problems that arise at times that show the disadvantages of talking. One being, place, sometimes you aren’t in an environment where it is easy to hold a conversation with someone over the phone whether it be from noise or lack of noise sometimes it’s just not a good time for a call. Which is what’s great about texting: you can do it quietly and not everyone in the room has to hear your conversation. At times though it’s better to talk over the phone like when you are having a serious long conversation. It’s all about the situation. Both have their advantages and disadvantages but both are very useful either way. Sometimes tone can be misinterpreted through texts which can create some tension during conversations but it can also make for some silly little happy moments. So just like most everything else in the world there is a good and bad side.
I do believe that as people get older the expectations for talking and texting should change. Becoming more mature and comfortable with your skills at talking whether it be text or call i think both should be used as a tool and not be taken for granted.
