Hello friends, parents, grandparents, teachers and most importantly the class of 2023’. The end has finally come to be finally free from this place. After this our lives will be going on different paths, I for one will be going on the path of becoming a high school health teacher. But before I become a health teacher I want to get one thing settled, one thing that I have been asked hundred times while in the RSU4 district, What’s my name?
My name is JEmerson, O-N. It is not An, En, In, Yn, Dawn. For the past 12-13 years there has only been about 10 teachers and about half of the 2023’ class that know how to spell my name the right way. The first time I ever had a real issue with my name is when I was in science class in either 7th or 8th grade when my teacher called me up to her desk to tell me that if I ever took the SAT’s they would take away 200 points automatically for spelling my name wrong. It was in fact spelt right. It made me think back to years prior, no one knew how to spell my name but I figured that would change when I got into high school. I mean it’s not that hard to put an O where there was an A.
Well you see I was not right about that. I won a scholarship from the Lewiston- Auburn rotary club, they spelt my name wrong which is fine they don’t know me, not a big deal. But I was in the peak of the week the next week and Mr. Aliberti spelt it wrong also. My principal, the guy I saw for 4 years every day saying “Good morning J”. Mr. Aliberti your better than this. But lucky for you all I forgive anyone who spelt my name wrong for these last 12 or so years because after this I probably won’t see a whole of you after this so why hold a grudge?
These years of no one spelling my name correctly have also given me the chance to see how people make different nicknames out of my actual name. I have Jordy, J-dog, Jordikins, Michael Jordan, Jord and many more. These names have come from almost everyone I know. They’re different, unique and perfect. It shows how many friendships and relationships I have built since starting school and growing up.
So with this, I’ll say class of 2023’ we did it, we may not know how to spell each other’s names but we did it. The day we have been looking forward to for so long is finally here. I’m proud of all of you. These years have been rough especially with covid and water pipes bursting but we were strong and got passed it. My name is Jordon, J-O-R-D-O-N and this has been a wild ride, peace out 2023’.
