Is Graffiti a Form of Art?

Graffiti is a form of art because it can be used to represent a company or event , the meaning of graffiti has changed, and graffiti meets the criteria of what art should be.

Graffiti is a form of art because it can be used to represent a company or an event that happened without it being illegal. If the artist asks for permission then they are legally able to spray paint on the building, and if used the right way graffiti can become something really cool and amazing creating beautiful murals. “Graffiti artists can create sanctioned murals for private property owners and get paid for it.” (Is Graffiti Art) this is what I mean when I say that graffiti can be used to create amazing murals and can become something super cool, and won’t be taken down because it is illegal.

Another reason graffiti is art is because just like other forms of art they all vary from each other and all create their own meaning and while the artist’s painting creates a specific meaning people have their own way of interpreting what the artist is trying to create “The messages have also evolved. Graffiti has always been somewhat political, but it has come a long way from simply tagging one’s name to parodying world leaders to make a statement.” (Graffiti as art) when graffiti first became recognizable it was usually a name as a weird font and a bunch of colors now if you look out in the city you can see graffiti everywhere whether it be small or huge. if you live in a small town you may see graffiti on a building or on the side of the gas station, people will look at it and hate on it, but if you go to a big city you will see these giant murals of animals or people and civilians looking at it will be so amazed by it saying how awesome it is, but in reality it’s still graffiti, it still has those crazy colors and cool lines or font.

Lastly graffiti meets all the criteria of art,  “larger pieces require planning and imagination and contain artistic elements like color and composition.”(Graffiti as Art) this is what I mean by graffiti meets the criteria of being a form of art it has color, it has dept, it is aesthetically pleasing to the eye, the components don’t clash  they work together to create an amazing piece of art that people would love to see in a museum.

With all the support I have found I have come to the conclusion that art is indeed a form of art because it can be used to represent a company or event,  the meaning of graffiti has changed, and graffiti meets all the criteria of what art should be.
