The Finest “Mainah”

The state of Maine is notorious for its hysterical accent. The “Maine accent” takes the English language, and changes every “er” to an “ah”. Creating the funniest-sounding sentences to listen to! On top of this, Maine is also known for its large number of red-necks that populate the rural areas of Maine. The rednecks up in the mountains and rural areas have made and accentuated terminology like “bub”, “send it”, and “looks mint”. One of these people is Troy Murphy, famously known as Donny Pelletier, and he is quite the character. Murphy was an Olympic skier, placing 4th in the Men’s Mogul competition in the 2018 Winter Olympics. Murphy got his pseudonym, Donny Pelletier, after making media content of himself skiing. He pretends to be a horrible skier while flying down moguls with incredible control, but making it look like he’s unskilled! Knowing his Olympic backstory and being a Mainer makes his content so funny and relatable.

Donny has created countless YouTube videos of himself shredding down Sunday River, making the most comical videos. You’ll normally see him skiing down a bumpy hill slope in the middle of winter, ripping his skis down the slope. One of my personal favorite videos and most funny videos of his is of Donny doing a weather forecast for Maine’s news. He starts off with the funniest line ever saying, “Saturday morning eight a.m., dumpin’ powdah … hahd” (Donny). What is normally a very serious broadcast switched to an absolute comedy of a weather broadcast? If only I saw it live. When I first saw the video I was dying laughing and showed all my family and friends. Only a true Mainer would laugh.
What’s even more funny is that he did another weather forecast but in the middle of the summer. This is so comical because he’s notorious for his skiing videos in the winter! Donny starts his broadcast staring dead straight at the camera, with his silly pitvipers on. It’s the middle of the summer when Donny does his broadcast for Maine’s weather. Donny continues to crack up the audience saying, “We should be seeing flurries in the next one to two weeks” (Donny)! This is hilarious because snow won’t be coming for the next 4 months! I was dying laughing!

Donny is such a comical character. I find him so funny because of my relevance to his accent and backstory. Laughter is a key part of life. Laughter brings joy to our lives. Without laughter, life would be moppy and sad, there would be nothing to look forward to. Dopamine wouldn’t exist without it. Donny Pelletier is a man who will always make me laugh and smile. I will forever laugh at Donny’s videos and know where to go if I need a good laugh!
