It was finally the end of summer and I was nervous for football to start but also excited at the same time. I couldn’t play the year before due to Covid. Double sessions were in full swing. Coach was giving me a lot more playing time than I expected. I wasn’t complaining. I definitely noticed a change of pace from years before. I was also competing with guys that were 3 years older than I was. Pre-Season had officially ended and my playing minutes just got lower and lower. I went home after a practice and told my parents I wanted to quit. I wasn’t having fun playing the sport I love. My mom picked me up from practice after a long day at work. My father just got home from work. I walked inside and my dad had a board in his hands. I said “Hey dad, what’s that for?” He responded with “I’m going to show you how you can start making the depth chart.” I was pumped up cause when it came to football my dad knew what he was talking about. He drew up a few stratagies on the board and then we went outside and did it in person. After that I realized I still had 3 years left and I took a deep breath and went to bed. I made the depth chart a few times and was happy with what I had earned. At the time I was balancing school, football, and travel hockey. I stayed very busy which helped me not think about football all the time.
The next year I was a two way starter that didn’t come off the field ever. Despite our ( 2-6) record… My junior year I was a 1st team All-Conference Defensive-End and a 2nd Team Offensive Guard. We ended up losing our first three games of the season and won every game till the second round of playoffs. My senior year we went (5-3). I was very proud how all the guys came together from being such a young unexperienced team. My senior year awards- I got 1st team All Conference Defensive End for the second year in a row. None of this would have happened if I wasn’t patient and stuck it out my freshman year.
