Social media is bad for young adults and children. Social media can cause many things including impulse thinking, shortens their attention span, cyberbullying, bad self esteem, ect. There are so many terrible things that come out of social media.
The videos or posts that are shared to social media can make kids or even young adults do things that are unsafe to see on social media and think that it would be something cool to do. “up to 40% of people are influenced by social media when making decisions or seeking advice.”(Troomi). Almost half of the people who watch social media are impacted or influenced to do something impulsive due to social media. If we didn’t have social media, kids would learn to think on their own and make their own and best decisions.
Social media also shortens people’s attention span due to how short and quick the clips or videos are on those apps. The rapid change of videos or what children are looking at on social media affects how quick kids or young adults will get distracted. “Rapidly changing content and constant interruptions reduce our capacity to pay attention;”(Center For Humane Technology). The quote proves that social media lessens our ability to focus.
Cyberbullying is a huge topic on social media. Almost 42% of children get cyberbullied. If we didn’t have social media then that wouldn’t happen. Getting cyberbullied affects how the child looks at themself and it lessens their self esteem. No child should need to go through getting bullied, especially online. “ It can lead to emotional and physical harm, loss of self-esteem, feelings of shame and anxiety, concentration and learning difficulties.” (Australian Human Rights Commission). This is all the effects of cyberbullying and none of them are pleasing. No child should need to deal with any of those things.
Social media is a terrible thing for most children and teens or even adults. Social media has more bad side effects than good. Most people who use social media for content purposes get a lot of hate or even get cyber bullied which is not good for their self esteem or their mental health. Social media use can also decrease the way you interact with the people who you love. It decreases communication and increases the risk of anxiety and depression. Snap chat for example is a way for people to post and talk about others behind their back or cyber bullying others because it all can be deleted or timed for how long the information is available. Snap chat is one of those apps that can be bad for someone’s mental health due to how the app is used. All apps can be used for cyber bullying or any of the other side effects of social media. It is just less common in apps such as Tiktok and Instagram or even Facebook.
