Is graffiti just art or actually graffiti? Graffti is typically some type of art, carried out by using spray paint in a public area and without permission. Those might not be the circumstances of all graffiti but for most occasions it is the case. People cannot argue against graffiti being vandalism because it’s a form of art. Location and permission- that is the important elements that makes this form of expression vandalism. What turns graffiti vandalism into art is the simple factor of permission and location. Simply because of lack of permission and poor choice of location it make the art of graffiti frowned upon, “if it wasn’t for the fact that most graffiti is placed on private property without the owner’s permission, then it might be more recognized as a legitimate form of art.” This quote backs up the fact that no matter what, if there is no permission then it is vandalism. One of the main reasons it is an issue of vandalism is because of the location of the graffiti. But it also, as much as it is a nuisance to the property owners or in public settings, the taxpayers, it cost those people lots of money to get rid of this graffiti, “Artists tag both public and private property, which becomes costly for taxpayers and business and property owners.” It is infact vandalism when it is damaging peoples property without permission. There have been efforts to redefine graffiti as an art form rather than vandalism, as well as taking the steps aimed at making its removal easier. As part of this issue being the annoyance and repair cost there has been attempts to aid this issue, “Many solutions have been put into practice around the world, with varying degrees of success. Paints have been developed that basically cause graffiti paint to dissolve when applied, or else make it quick and easy to remove.”
Community groups and government departments coordinate graffiti removal teams.” They try to make it easier to forgive the graffiti vandalism. Even though graffiti is an art form and perhaps conveys a message, it is nevertheless vandalism. Most graffiti is performed on private property without permission and in such a manner that creates some form of damage, which in turn makes it vandalism.
