I have always found that calling someone is much more effective than texting for most situations. It’s much more direct because you don’t have to worry about waiting for a response on a phone call, and it’s a lot easier to decipher someone’s emotions when you hear a real voice, as opposed to reading a text. The only time I really think it is more convenient to text is if you are at an event in which you can’t talk or you are just giving out small pieces of info. If you have to think about whether you should call someone or just text them, make the call because it’s not like it’s rude to call someone. You get clear information, and a lot of people, like myself, appreciate a call even more than a text. I find that there is less room for interpretation in a phone call versus a text.
People primarily use calling and texting because they are the fastest, most widespread form of communication, but we use them depending on what fits the situation best. For example, when you’re driving, you would probably perfer a call rather than a text, because this way you don’t have to use your hands aside from pushing a button, and you aren’t overly distracted on the road. Informally, as a student and teenager, I could communicate with a text and that would be acceptable. In a more professional situation, a call or email would most likely be the preferred method of communication.
There are certain situations where you might perfer to text someone instead because it may be a time when you can’t speak or would like to keep a matter private. Perhaps you’re at a funeral, graduation, or wedding, and it would seem rude take a phone call in the middle of a ceremony. I find texting especially useful when I am hunting because it minimizes noise and attention. At the same time, the emotions of the situation can not fully be conveyed through a text message.
In closing, I believe that the choice to call or text in my current situation is a personal decision. While many people my age find texting easy and convenient, I still like the overall process of a phone call to get my message across.
