The problems ahead for driverless cars

Driverless cars are cars operated using a computer and artificial intelligence to navigate and follow the road laws, and these cars are operated using a very complex array of sensors to alert the car to any traffic or issues with the road ahead. Driverless cars have become a new thing in the past few years, with the technology around artificial intelligence having massive breakthroughs in their fields and wanting to use it to its full potential. Many people have fears about cars not being operated by a person, and that an artificial intelligence will never make the quick, split-second decisions like the human mind can. Another thing about driverless cars is that many people are fearful of them on the roads, and that leads to laws being passed around them being difficult to do. Will driverless cars ever be advanced enough to fully take over the roads? And would there still be a need for cars to have a driver?

The speed bumps or challenges ahead of driverless cars and the issues that have been found as they their tested are their descion making “Unlike a human who reacts instinctively in an emergency, an autonomous car will have to calculate and choose the appropriate response to each scenario, including possibly a choice between killing its occupants or other people.”(Gibbs 1) And this is a main concern for people as they look into driverless vehicles. Another speed bump in developing driverless cars is passing legislation allowing driverless cars to be used and tested on real roads and insurance. “Legislation must also be changed before self-driving vehicles will be permitted on public roads beyond small tests, while insurers must decide who pays when an autonomous car inevitably has an accident.”(Gibbs 1), which will be a main concern when an inevitable accident occurs between driverless vehicles, who would be the one to pay the driver, the car company, or the insurance company. Because if the user is not the one operating the vehicle, who is responsible for the damages, and that will become a massive problem of people fighting over who is the one that is financially liable for damages. As for passing legislation, it will be difficult with it is such an innovation and the many unknowns that you can’t account for, making people uneasy about passing laws about their testing and use on public roads

Will driverless cars ever be advanced enough to fully take over the roads? Would you ever take the risk on a driverless car in the future? I believe if the technology is developing at the speed it is as of right now, I believe that I would consider the use of driverless cars in my life, but as of right now, I do not believe the technology is advanced enough to take the plunge into it as of right now. as for other people I belive that in the future driverless cars will over come their obstacles and people will become accepting of idea of being a car controlled by a computer and having no control in a situation.
