Should Playing Video Games Be Considered A Sport?

Should video games be considered a sport? Many people are against the idea but do they know what goes into being a “Professional Athlete”? Video games take just as much skill to play as a normal sport like basketball or football; the players who play video games spend much more time  playing games practicing than a pro athlete. Weird right? Then you can’t forget these athletes that are a part of  the “Esports league” or “Professional Gaming League” They are just like pro athletes; they have a contract they get paid they have events it amazing how far gaming has come in the past few years. Many people think that anyone can become a pro gamer that they just need to play video games 24/7.

There is much more to it than that. Just like the basketball or Football pros they need gear they like have the top tier gear so do people with video games for example they like having the best monitor out there like what monitor has the best FPS (Frames Per Second) they like having the best headsets just like the coaches on the field. Brings me to my next point: they have teams just like athletes they have separate roles they have certain skills. So I think personally that Gaming should be considered a sport with these reasons above and the fact Tom Brady gets paid $25 million a year to stand around and throw a football. Let’s be honest anyone can do that.

So I was interviewing a few students asking them questions like should professional gamer’s be considered athletes? Should they even be paid to be on a team? Should it be considered a sport? Everyone gave me the stink eye or evil eye their like “What is he talking about? This kid sounds crazy! So i told them there is so much more involved then you think they when they go to events they have to pay for tickets pay for gear it just like the football players also with the revenue it brings in its about 150$ per ticket when other people want to go to these events to watch their favorite teams play just like any other sport.

Video games should be considered a sport  because it has the same competition level as any regular sport. People also have asked me or made opinions like ” It doesn’t take long to become a pro its easy just sit on your butt and play video games that simple” No it takes just as long as becoming a “pro athlete” as it does becoming a professional gamer.

I think it should be considered a sport, the scene of competitive gaming is growing and growing each year, with the massive revenue most of the game tournaments bring in, I’m surprised it hasn’t been labeled a sport. Just like regular sports these “Gaming Athletes” train and put hard work and dedication into this.

That’s not what I’m saying @Vwright15 what my message is that video games should be considered a sport because it takes time effort and practice and countless effort just like any other sport and no Tom Brady makes to much he does not deserve that much money we should be paying our soldiers,Firemen,Police officers etc…. more than that egotistical jerk.

So do you think that there should be ‘teams’ that you can all get together and play a video game and they will all get payed for it? If so how much should they get paid and what should the pay be based off?

They have a professional gaming league Called “MLG” or “Major League Gaming” they have teams for all types of games from FPS’s(First Person Shooters) to RPG’s (Role Playing Games) and in order to get money from playing they have to put money in to enter and based on how many people enter is how they determine the pay out.
