Field hockey is not the most popular sport at Oak Hill High School. It is not the sport that gets the most attention either. However, in the past couple years, this team has made it so that field hockey stands out as one of the top sports at Oak Hill High School. Of course football still being the number one sport.
Let’s first start with last year. The 2014 varsity team made it to the Regional Final game against Lisbon High School. Although we lost to our rival in double overtime with nine seconds left on the board, the Oak Hill field hockey team did not hang their heads to low. After all, they were the first field hockey team for Oak Hill to ever make it to the Regional Final Championship game. Little did everyone know that that was not going to be the only success that they would have.
As the 2015 preseason approached, the team was looking better than anyone expected them to be. However, as the first game came and went, the season did not seem as promising anymore. They lost their first game against Mount Valley 3-1. After the loss, the team was determined to not let this one game control the outcome of their season.
More games went by and they started winning. At one point they were even on an eight game winning streak. Not only did they advance in the standings, but their drive and desire to win increased as well. The end of the season was looking very promising, until the time came for the Mountain Valley Conference Championship game. Although this game did not have any affect on the standings, it still was a very important game.
The Oak Hill field hockey team ended up losing the game to Dirigo 2-1 in over time. Even though this game was very hard for them to lose, they knew they had to pick up their intensity so that they could excel in playoffs. The first three games came and went for them in playoffs. Before they knew it, they were going to be playing in the Regional Final Championship game against Lisbon for the second year in a row.
Although they were very nervous, they were determined to not let Lisbon get the upper-hand again. After playing 60 minutes and giving everything they had, Oak Hill Field Hockey won the game 3-0. Not only were they the Southern Regional Champs, but now they were going to be playing in the State Championship game for the first time ever. No field hockey team for Oak Hill has ever gone this far.
After a huge pep rally and an outstanding send off from the effort of the entire community, the field hockey girls were ready to compete against MCI in the State game. There was nothing that could have been done to prepare them more for this game and they gave all effort that they had for the entire 60 minutes. Sadly though, they lost 3-0. This was completely heartbreaking for all of them, especially the five seniors. Yet, their hearts weren’t completely broken because they knew that they just made history for Oak Hill High School.
Seven of the twenty-two players on the team made the Mountain Valley Conference teams. ZButeau19 and LWright17 both made honorable mention. EHannigan17 and and LFuller17 made second team. AFuller16, BSurette16, and KVeilleux16 all made first team.
Even though the team was a little disappointed for losing in the State Championship game, they knew that the awards that some of the teammates won and the games that they did win did not go unnoticed. Oak Hill Field Hockey went to States and they are already on planning on winning next year.
