A scientist named Michael Altman discovered an artifact in Yucatan Peninsula during the 23rd century, called the Black Marker, that dawned a new religion: Unitology. Humanity believed aliens elegantly created humans and when they died, would be reunified in Heaven through the Convergence. The Markers created signals that drove anyone in its range mad, creating hallucinations of dead loved ones, sending messages to their descendants. Altman was the only one who was resistant to the delusions and knew them to be folly. After several attempts of sabotaging the artifact, he was assassinated, and become the Martyr for Unitology, only because everyone else thought the Marker spoke through him, because of his resistance
By the 25th century, humanity had consumed all of Earth’s resources and was at the edge of becoming extinct. Through their desperation, they traveled far into space to discover new worlds to strip all valuable resources off of. Colossal ships called Planetcrackers were constructed, with the USG Ishimura being the first and most famous of all. As humans continued to gather essentials, a restricted planet by the name of Aegis 7 was rediscovered, which had been restricted for many years.
Below the crust of the planet, a religious artifact called the Red Marker was found, creating enormous commotion between the Unitologists. But, the Marker only bred madness, anarchy, and Necromorphs: A parasitic race of aliens that use the flesh of any sentients to mutate into abominations. The monsters sprouted blades made from their host’s very bones as well as huge tusks from the mandible. Anyone that survived the onslaught fled to the orbiting Ishimura, only to bring it with them unknowingly. After a mere couple hours, the Ishimura went dark.
A small repair crew was sent to check on it’s spoils. Isaac Clarke, an engineer, volunteered for the endeavor. His girlfriend was on board. Inside, Isaac only found death and the man-made marker everyone believe to be alien in origin, as well as his girlfriend, who committed suicide. Using it, Isaac stopped the chaos by dropping the tethered chunk of planet beneath the Ishimura, obliterating Aegis 7 and the Red Marker with its apparitions of Nicole. As Isaac drifted outside of the planets orbit, exhausted beyond words, facing the control console he turned to his right, and there she was, the apparition of Nicole screaming in his face.
