Breakfast foods- benefits and downfalls

We’ve all heard time and again that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, yet convincing the majority of Americans to make this meal top priority sometimes can seem like an impossible task.  It not only provides important daily nutrients such as protein, fiber, calcium and carbohydrates, but it also helps improve school performance, allowing students to do better on tests, according to the Food and Nutrition Service. People who skip breakfast are unlikely to make up their daily requirement for some vitamins and minerals that a simple breakfast would have provided.

Oatmeal is the number one breakfast food. Just avoid the flavored kinds, which can be packed with sugar. Instead, sweeten your bowl with milk and a bit of honey, and top with fruit and nuts. Greek yogurt is the next best breakfast food. Yogurt is loaded with calcium and boasts plenty of protein nearly twice as much as regular yogurt to keep you feeling full throughout the morning. Your best bet is to choose a plain, nonfat variety, and add some fruit to give it some sweetness and flavor. The fruit in your yogurt will also give you an extra boost too! According to one study, eating half a grapefruit before each meal may help you slim down faster, thanks to the fruit’s fat-burning properties and its beneficial effect on blood sugar and insulin levels. Grapefruit is also hydrating, filling, and packed with immunity-boosting antioxidants. Eggs are the most known breakfast food because everyone knows eggs are very good for you. Once shunned for being high in dietary cholesterol, eggs are now embraced as a healthy source of protein and nutrients like vitamin. Blueberries is another good breakfast food. Studies suggest that eating blueberries regularly can help improve everything from memory and motor skills to blood pressure and metabolism.

One of the worst breakfast foods you can eat is a bagel and cream cheese. Unless it’s a whole wheat bagel and fat free cream cheese of course. The second worst foods to eat for breakfast is cereal like Fruit Loops, Cocoa Puffs, Honey Nut Cheerios, you’re familiar with the store-bought cereals that are meant to appeal to the sweet teeth of big and little kids as they wander the grocery aisles. Most of these processed cereals are jam-packed with sugar and will only lead to an energy crash sometime after 10:30am. Who wouldn’t want a better memory just by eating blueberries more often? My favorite breakfast food is a smoothie and an egg sandwich. Just by getting up a little earlier to eat anyone of those foods can help you tremendously, and it wouldn’t go unnoticed either. You’d have more energy and perhaps even a better day at work or school.
