Rule #9: It’s More than Just Rain or Snow

Chapter 9 states that “weather is never really just weather”.

Different weather changes can have symbolism; for instance, fog is usually used as a setting for confusion and rain can symbolize a cleansing or new growth.

Examples: The Peanuts, It was a dark and stormy night, Noah’s Ark, The Virgin and the Gypsy, The Three Strangers, Song of Solomon, A Farewell to Arms, The Dead, The Waste Land, From Ritual to Romance, The Rainbow, The Fish, Bleak House, Party Going, The Pedersen Kid, The Snow Man

An example of how weather is used to help set the mood is in The Hound of the Baskervilles. The moors throughout this story are covered with a dense fog (setting a sense of confusion) while Holmes and Watson work to solve the mystery of ferocious beast. Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson are set on a mission to investigate the mysterious death of Charles Baskerville. When his nephew comes into town a new fear sets out that the curse of the hound will strike again.
