Welyn. “Padded Room.” Single, Indie, May 15, 2022.
https://genius.com/Welyn-padded-room-lyrics . Padded Room by Welyn is one of my favorite rap songs, which is how it earned its place on this list. Padded Room is about how the artist, Welyn, feels like he’s going crazy in the modern world, he feels like his house is his own mental hospital, or his room is the titular padded room. Welyn learns through writing and rap to take it easy and enjoy the little things in life and stop stressing about everything we obsess over. Padded Room is a good example of a song about happiness, life, and stress. Padded Room reminds us to take it easy, because life is crazy and we’ll also go crazy if we take it too seriously. Welyn says he feels like everything takes too long, he’s going crazy, and he’s stressed. Throughout the song Welyn uses images like death, the winter, the devil, and the stars to evoke themes of stress, life, and happiness. “I'm off racin', star gazin', don't have a care / I be truly just doin' me, feeling debonair / It's hell to pay and the devil is dwelling there / I swear these stresses will cost me more than a head of hair” (Welyn 24/27). Welyn reminds us that, to achieve true happiness, we have to go with the flow. If we don’t manage our stress, it will consume us, and that is the inherent struggle of life. I relate to this song by Welyn because sometimes it’s easy to stress over things like school or life and feel like you’re going crazy. I have to remind myself to take it easy sometimes too.
Billy Marchiafava. “Indie Pop Type Beat.” Single, Peter Kuli, Aug. 20, 2021.
https://genius.com/Billy-marchiafava-indie-pop-type-beat-lyrics . Indie Pop Type Beat is a song I discovered relatively recently when I heard it on Spotify, and it really resonated with me. The song is about how the artist, Billy Marchiafava, got his life and music career together. Billy starts the song talking about how he used to be stressed, or upside down and inside out, as he puts it, and got his life back together through his music career and his current happiness. Indie Pop Type Beat is a song about happiness and growth. Indie Pop Type Beat aims to tell us that at the bottom, there’s nowhere to go but up. No matter where we are in life, including the perceived rock bottom, we can still grow as people and ‘achieve’ happiness. The song also serves to remind that happiness isn’t a goal to be achieved, but rather a state of being. Billy Marchiafava uses flashbacks throughout the song to a time when things were worse for him, contrasting to now when they are good to show us his growth as a musician and a person, and how no matter what you can be happy. “I was runnin' out of time, runnin' out of time / Runnin' through my mind, I was thinkin' too much that day / I was upside down / and inside out / Now my feet are back on the ground” (Indie Pop Type Beat 6/9). Billy Marchiafava repeats this chorus several times throughout the song, showing his growth and the happiness we can all have.
Kill Bill: The Rapper. “Backwoods.” Ramona, Schadillic, Sep. 13, 2014.
https://genius.com/Kill-bill-the-rapper-backwoods-lyrics . Backwoods is the first song in the first album, Ramona, made by Kill Bill: The Rapper. Backwoods is about the struggle the artist faces to find meaning and happiness in his life. Bill struggles with coping mechanisms and facing the reality of the world with no filter and often finds himself stressed because of it, but concludes there’s nothing he can do but accept the temporary ‘summertime’ happiness and the bad that comes with it. Backwoods explores ideas of happiness, life, hope, and anxiety/fear. In the beginning of the song, Bill talks about how his house is littered with trash, and he reflects on his happy past and feels anxiety at how bad the future could be, and a mix of hope at turning his situation around. “Never been one for the talking, talking, talking / Anxiety-ridden, I hide in the rhythm / I'm ficus, burning bush. I turned to Christ then burned a book / It turned to ice; I learned to cook it. Work at night, I turned and / booked it” (Kill Bill: The Rapper 25/29). This excerpt reveals a lot about the themes behind Backwoods. Bill says he feels anxiety constantly and only feels safe when he’s ‘hiding in the rhythm’ of rap. The ficus is a symbol of peace, and Bill means that he transforms into a state of peace while he’s rapping, losing his anxiety. This happiness the ficus symbolizes is only temporary until it is all ‘burnt out’. Bill also mentions turning to Christ, which means that he feels religion makes life better and makes him more happy.
Nohidea. “Smile.” Single, Nohidea, Nov. 11, 2016.
https://genius.com/Nohidea-smile-lyrics . Smile, by Nohidea, is about the artist losing someone he cares about, and feeling empty, or like something is missing from his life. In Smile, the main character talks about losing his mind after a break up, drinking heavily, retail therapy, and how he hates the whole situation but ultimately has to accept it. Smile uses themes of love, loss, and change. Nohidea talks about losing someone you really love, and the feeling of still loving them after they are gone. “Yeah, I'm walking through the city but it's feeling like a ghost town / Yeah, I'm dreaming that you're with me, but you're gone I'm so alone now / Hating this situation, I'm too tired of facing the feeling I'm craving / This life is amazing, but something is missing, and don't call me crazy but I feel like living way up in the stars” (Nohidea 10/18). It’s never stated why the artist lost the nameless girl in the song, but it is implied that he didn’t want to break up, further emphasizing the themes of love and loss. Nohidea talks about how he can’t handle the extreme change after losing this girl, and turns to negative coping mechanisms. He says that after losing his girlfriend, he feels completely alone, like the city he’s in is a ghost town. Through the loss and change, he can’t help but feel like something is missing, and can’t understand his own feelings.
Kill Bill: The Rapper. “RPG.” RESIN, MNDSGN, Aug. 2, 2015.
https://genius.com/Kill-bill-the-rapper-rpg-lyrics . RPG, by Kill Bill: The Rapper was released in 2015 as track 5 of his album RESIN. RPG focuses on issues in Bill’s life, as well the issues of his friend and colleague Rav. The song uses metaphor and simile, comparing life to an RPG, or role playing video game, where Bill alludes to things such as perfectionism, body dysmorphia, and social issues. RPG deals with themes such as friendship, survival, life, and success. Bill uses themes of ‘the final boss’ in archetypal RPGs, to evoke themes of survival. Several times throughout the song Bill uses metaphor where he takes the form of the final boss preparing himself for the challenges of life, so that he may survive. Also in the song, Bill takes the place of the ‘player’ of the imagined RPG, assembling a ‘squad’ of friends to take down the final boss of life, and to succeed. “I do just what I gotta do / I had to cut some folks out, I mean a lot of you / You say you ride with me, who you think you're talkin' to? / That don't vibe with me, I ain't tryin' to talk with you / You know me, homie, squad over everybody” (Kill Bill: The Rapper Verse 2). This quote deals with Bill assembling his ‘squad’ of friends, speaking of how he had to cut some people out who didn’t fit his ideal group of people. The song never states whether Bill or his friends defeat the final boss of life, but the song does say they survive, and feel success throughout, which is inspiring.
