Out of Nowhere by Maria Padian is about an exemplary high school student named Tom, his school is infested with Somalian immigrants. Tom is forced to interact with them even though he doesn’t really understand them and he starts to understand how the Somalians live and how difficult their lives are. Tom keeps tainting his good reputation and is trying to figure out how to not seem like a failure to his parents. My first quote is, “So long, college money. What little my parents had saved, anyway,” (Padian 33). This is a thought that Tom has after he got in big trouble because he thinks he’ll have to kiss his goals goodbye because of what he did and he is also concerned with how his parents feel about what he did.

Phuc Tran talks about how English has a subjunctive and Vietnamese does not. Then he walks the audience through how he came to America, struggled with growing up as a geek, setbacks to achieving his goals in college, and the unexpected encouragement from his dad. When he learned how to accept the now and ignore subjunctive it helped him be more happier. A quote that connects this to Out of Nowhere is, “I didn’t want to major in Art and English anymore, as I awaited some reprimand from him,” (Tran 4). This quote explains how Phuc is scared to tell his dad that he quit his double major because he is worried with how he will react and doesn’t want to be thought of as a failure.

If your characters are reaching their goals, what did they need to do in order to accomplish them?

In Out Of Nowhere by Maria Padian, Saeed is an immigrant from Somalia who now lives in Maine. He loves to play soccer and has dreams of playing for Manchester United. Saeed is a very good soccer player and blows Tom away with his skills and is doing everything he can to get better. A quote to show this is when they played their first soccer game together, "On my right this motion blur, this shadow in our teams uniform, flashed past me. I watched as he scooped up my pass and moved like blowing smoke, weaving a path toward the goal" (Padian 2).This shows that Saeed is very good at soccer and has a lot of potential with his speed to accomplish his goals of playing for Manchester United.

I like how you mentioned that Saeed is good at soccer because it's an important part of the story. I didn't mention Saeed much in my summary, but it's important to the story because it's a different perspective other than Tom's, which is the book's main focus.

In the book, Behold the Dreamers by Imbolo Mbue, Jende Jonga had a goal of acquiring his green card. He was in the U.S on a work permit so he was allowed to work even though he didn't have a green card yet. He applied and got a job as a chauffeur for a big company. He needed to just get approved for asylum to stay in America. If they didn't approve his asylum work visa wouldn't be valid anymore. “How would he have explained that his work permit and driver’s license were valid only for as long as his asylum application was pending or approved” (Mbue 8). So when he applied he told half truths to the interviewer. Scared of what would happen if the truth was revealed. So to accomplish his goal he needs to be granted asylum.

In my book, the main character's goals are pretty different than that but it sounds like a pretty hard goal to accomplish. What steps has he taken so far to get closer to reaching his goal?

In Out Of Nowhere by Maria Padian, Saeed is an immigrant from Somalia who immigrated to Maine. He is obsessed with soccer and it's the only sport they would play in Somalia. Saeed joins the same team as Tom and he is a very talented soccer player, A quote that kinda shows that Saeed is a great soccer player is when " On my right this motion blur, this shadow in our teams uniform, flashed past me. I watched as he scooped up my pass and moved like blowing smoke, weaving a path towards the goal" (Padian 2). This is just kinda giving us a  image of how good and fast Saeed is and it shows that Saeed has a good chance of maybe accomplishing his dreams of going pro.

I focussed more on Tom than Saeed, who do you think will be more successful in reaching their goals based on where they are at in this point of the story?

This is very similar to what I said and what I got from that quote as he is a very good soccer player and could accomplish his dreams.

in the book I'm reading, "Girl In Translation" by Jean Kwok is about a Chinese girl, and her mother moving to america from hong-kong, however they don't speak a whole lot of English. other than a few phrases. and they don't understand it either. and in late November she started school. as far as I am in the book right now, it has not given any insight to her goal nor what she needs to do to achieve it. the only insight is in the prologue when she says "i've always had a knack for school." (kwok 1) and "I made a decision that changed the trajectory of the rest of my life." (kwok 1) so she may do something in education.
