In the Ted Talk “The need for family reunification-to make families whole again” by Elizabeth Zion, she discusses how her family is having issues with getting asylum in Ireland. From a young age, Zion had to watch her mom struggle to get by as a single mom with five kids, and thought how it would have been easier with their father there. “Finding housing in Ireland is difficult enough already, but just imagine how challenging it is for a single mother, trying desperately to provide for her five children,” (Zion 5:10).

Jende Jonga, in Behold the Dreamers, is a driver for Lehman Brothers executive Clark Edwards. His boss's wife, Cindy Edwards, called him to their house to ask him to tell her where her husband was being driven to. When Jende tried to assure her that her husband wasn't cheating, she indirectly gave him an ultimatum. “... think very carefully, and let me know if you'd like to have a job to support them,” (Mbue 193).

In my book The Grief Keeper, the main character Marisol gets separated from her whole family besides her sister and seeks asylum in the US for both her and her sister. Marisol goes through the process of getting a visa and getting to stay in the US, but she gets rejected, she struggles with keeping her and her sister in the country but finds a way to stay by being part of a experiment, there she struggles to keep going in this experiment and starts to feel she's letting her sister down. “ Are you having second thoughts?”...whats a little grief for safety?”(Villasante 74). This shows that she's struggling with the experiment and is having second thoughts but wants to keep both her and her sister safe.

Do you think Marisol will be able to get a visa to stay in the U.S without the experiment? Or will she still have to do the experiment to stay in the U.S?

In my book Out Of Nowhere by Maria Padian the main character Tom Robinson meets a refugee who is muslim. He showed up to play soccer but struggled to communicate with the coach and his teammates and he has no father, only a mother who doesn't know english. His sister has to be a translator for their family because she's the only one who speaks fluent english. She says “my mother does not know how to write her own name. But I will write for her on these lines, and she will put her mark, and that is good, I think” (Padian 18). Saeed's sister is the only way they can communicate with Americans is through her. Saeed struggles in school and with sports because of the language barrier.

What if Saeed was able to speak English a little better? Do you think it would make it easier for him to succeed in life?

In my novel “Girl In Translation” - Jean Kwok it is about an 11 year old girl who moved from Hong-Kong to New York with her mom which was a big cultural change for them as they spoke a different language, did their own things differently than others etc. Kimberly and her mom, who is called Ma in this novel, were looking around for apartments but the only ones they could find were described as no heat, no furniture, and kind of in a sketchy area.

in this novel we do see Kimberly helping her mom out withing different parts of the novel especially in the factory that they work at. Kimberly and her mom had worked in a factory for two other people to pay back the money that they had used for medicine because Ma was sick before they moved to New York. "I was scheduled to work in the library three days a week and to get special tutoring in English on the fourth-though I had yet to figure out how I was going to fit all of this in with helping ma at the factory too." This is similar to my book Out of Nowhere by Maria Padian that Saeed moved from Somalia to Maine and had to learn a new language and he would get in trouble at school if he didn't speak English.

Do you think Kimberly helping her mom affected her life in any major way?

In my book Out Of Nowhere by Maria Padian, Saeed does struggle to support himself and his family. He has to balance his academics, soccer, and work to make more money to support his family. He needs to make sure that he passes high school and gets his education to get a good job or get into a good college in the future. He also is a very talented soccer player and he has the athletic potential to go pro. He also needs to spend time working to earn money for his family as his parents don't have jobs that earn a ton of money. A quote to show this is, "I’ll put my mother down as Saeed’s second emergency contact. And I'll write my doctor and dentist," (Padian 19). This quote shows how Saeed is struggling to find the support to play soccer as his parents don’t have all of the requirements to sign up.

this is also like my book, towards the end we find out Kimberly will make it through her years of high school and working in the factory and will continue her years as a surgeon.

Do you believe the difficulties Saeed faces would have been different if he was able to speak English better? Made it easier for him to adjust to his new life?
