Chapter 12- Is That a Symbol?

  1. Allegory

-Caves

-Rivers

-Actions

Outcome= A deeper meaning between the direct words or objects presented.

The Lego Movie (Phil Lord 2014), The Matrix (Lana Wachowski 1999), Spirited Away (Hayao Miazaki 2001), 1984 (Michael Radford 1985), Fight Club (David Fincher 1999)

The Lego Movie- This movie depicts symbolism, along with allegory, as the “special one”, in this case the main character Emmet, has to defeat the evil “Lord Business. This was all to be done with the weapon “Kragle” with the help of a “Piece of Resistance” of which Emmet finds on accident at work. As the plot plays out, soon viewers find out that the actual world is not of the lego people, but that of humans, in which a boy is controlling these characters. “Kragle” is actually Krazy Glue, which the boy in real life disliked, as his father would glue lego pieces permanently in place. At the end, the boy's father realizes that glueing the legos in place inhibits his son's creativity, allowing for the son to finish Emmet’s journey as “special one”, bringing down “Lord Business”. The point of The Lego Movie, is to Allude through the story of the lego people, that creativity was being blocked in the real world. Without the freedom of creativity, the boy could not finish Emmet’s story.

Finding Nemo- Nemo and his friends see a boat passing over their reef. They all knew their parents would be angry if they went near it but they never understood why. They call the underside of the boat the "butt" which makes them disregards how dangerous the boat actually and find the boat more comical than anything. Nemo decides to tough the bottom of the "Butt" and gets captured by humans. The deeper meaning behind the word "Butt" was that it may have seemed comical and harmless on the surface, hence the name, but was actually very dangerous for the sea life.

Moana- In Moana, she takes a quest to retrieve the "Heart of Defeaty" with her partner Maui, who initially stole the heart in the first place. The "Heart of Defeaty" appears to be a glowing green rock that can heal the island. The deeper meaning behind the rock is that it was an actually heart which belonged to the island goddess who controlled the well being of the islands. A small rock amounted to be very important and was the heart of a goddess.
