Thomas Foster puts emphasis on his opinion that the fairy tale with the most enduring appeal is "Hansel and Gretel". Hansel and Gretel centers around two lost kids who are unable to find their way back home. This often plays on cultural anxieties. There have been many recreations and/or references of Hansel and Gretel in more modern stories, such as Robert Coover's "The Gingerbread House" (1969) and Angela Carter's "The Bloody Chamber" (1979).
