In the Ted Talk “Grammar, Identity and the dark side of the subjunctive” by Phuc Tran, he discusses how he had a difficult time in school because of his name. He moved from Vietnamese to the U.S. and had to learn english. His name was weird in the U.S. but it was normal in vietnamese. He got bullied for it and told people he was going to change it. “I'm changing my name to Peter so please call me Peter, what? You're changing your name to peter? As in “suck my peter””(Tran, 7:05). He then realizes that nothing he does will make these people stop. He was different and he had to accept that.

In the novel “Home is not a Country” the character Nima also seems to possess having a hard time at school. She also found it difficult to fit in. She wanted to be back at her homeland but she still wanted to have a good experience here. She didn't speak at school and didn't have friends. “The girl who sit behind me in math came over once to work on a project, told everyone after that it smelled like rice and dirty plants” (Elhillo, 10). The kids in school wouldn't give her a chance, instead they treated her like she was invisible, or like she was just someone to make fun of.

Do you think That it is difficult to fit in when you move from a different country?

To lbarnaby24,

Based on my book it is indead dificult to fit in when moving to a different country. This is due to the differences in culture, and is called out in my book. But before I go further into detail on my book in relation to the question here's what my book, All My Rage, has been about so far. This book followes the lifes of 3 people, Misbah a married women from Pakistan who now runs a motel in California, Salahudin the son of Misbah born in America, and Noor who is from Pakistan but came when a earthquake destroyed her life. anyway the plot of the first third is about Misbah dying and their life dealing with everything that they have to face. Now then circling back to earlier here's it being called out, ""You look like a FOB with those braids." I don't respond. I had the braids in my passport picture, too. I like them. They remind me of who I was. Of the people who loved me."(Tahir, page 18). As you can see a person, Noor, is beinging called out for not fitting in due to her fair which Noor has kept as it reminds her of her life in Pakistan.

To lbarnaby24,

Based on my book, it is not a different country that she moved to it was a different school. She got into Metco which is a program that is at a private school. But the problem is her culture, the school that she got into is filled with white privileged kids beside the other kids in the program. She is having a difficult time balancing if she wants to act 'normal' or be who she truly is."..But explaining my perspective on immigration to a bunch of white kids in a richie-rich school." (Leon 97) Lili is showing that she is not truly ever gonna fit into this school unless she acts 'white'.

Based on my book, His family is gone and he is supposed to survive alone on the streets. His father died, his mom sold his sister in china, and his mother went back to china to make money after being arrested once. due to his family being gone and the way he has no money to survive nobody wants to welcome him into their home. he turned to being a thief in order to survive. Once people on the streets and people he once knew started to notice who he turned into they didn't want to welcome him in "I was a known thief, and so he'd kept me from entering while at the same time appearing not to offend me"(139-140) his friend didn't invite him inside his mother restaurant since they found out hes known for stealing whatever he can get his hands on.
