In the Ted Talk “Immigrant voices make democracy stronger” the speaker Sayu says “government positions had no idea how scared immigrants were of law enforcement.” (Bhojuwani).
When she said this I instantly thought about my character Mateo in my book. It was normal like any other day when he was at the family business and two ICE agents walked through the doors looking for his father. From this day on Mateo and his family have to live in constant fear of them, “The second I sit down in the chemistry classroom, the heaviness returns to my stomach. It may come and go, but the truth is that I have no way to fully escape it” (Aleman 18) Mateo becomes distracted and his mind never stops thinking about the Ice agents, he grows his biggest fear which is of the ICE agents. He no longer feels the safety which he once felt and has to live differently trying to avoid ICE who is coming after his family for reasons he doesn't even know or fully understand.
Does your character have to live differently because of the fear of law enforcement or being targeted? Or have they had a serious experience with law enforcement?
