In the Ted Talk by Phuc Tran called Grammar, identity, and the dark side of the Subjunctive he  talks about not knowing what should’ve happened and about his dad trying to learn a new language and not knowing how to understand some things. The Novel “the poet X” by Elizabeth Agevedo is about a girl with the name Xiomara Batista. She lives in Harlem, New york. Her parents are strict and dominican. Her Parents are really religious and don't really support her. She is talking about her feelings and her view on things. She thinks that she can’t complete the expectations of her parents.

In the Ted Talk, he is talking about how his parents don’t understand his job situation. He wanted to take a break from his job, and his dad thought he would quit his job. "What? You quit your job, are you crazy?” (5:47, Phuc Tran) Both of these are connected by, Parents not understanding their own kids. The girl in the Novel wants to be different from other girls, but her parents don’t understand her. “I curse up a storm and am always ready to knuckle up. Caridad recites Bible verses and promotes peace.” (pg. 30, Elizabeth Acevedo). Does the character in your novel also have parents that don’t understand them? How does this show in your novel?

In my book Gabi, A Girl in Pieces by Isabel Quintero, it talks about a Girl named Gabi and her life as a Senior in high school being a bigger girl, having a beautiful but pregnant best friend, a gay best friend who just got kicked out, a meth addict dad, and a mexican mom. Through all these struggles and side problems for Gabi she still tries to overlook them. Gabi doesn't dwell on these problems or try to make them seem happier than they are. She simply lives through the conflicts. Based on my book a quote that relates is about Gabi and her mother. “ On and off. Like lights itself- bright and dark. Mother and daughter. That's us. I wish it were different. I wish she would be more understanding, but that's not who she is, I guess.”(Quintero26) This quote shows directly that Gabi’s mom doesn't understand her but even though Gabi still loves and appreciates her and her efforts.

In my Novel my Character Xiomara Baptista doesn't dwell what other people think about her. She wants to be different and she doesn't try to fit in. Her parents don't understand her, and she thinks that she is not behaving like her parents want her to.

My book Border Child by Michel Stone, shows a family, Hector and Lilia, who lost their child, Alejandra, while trying to cross the border into America from Mexico. It shows their struggle to find Alejandra, where Hector finds someone who gives information about where she could be, and he starts taking on other jobs to get enough money to pay for the bus fares to go north to find Alejandra.

My book does not talk about parents who don’t understand children, but it shows the family members, friends, and coworkers who don’t fully understand why Hector and Lilia wanted to find a better life in America. “Just a few years ago he’d been a driver working his way to foreman . . . but since his return from el norte, such work was considered by his employer too good for him. Hector was a deserter who’d believed himself above this work, these people, and the other workers, the ones who’d remained in this village and now shunned him.”(Stone 28)

I find it odd that people don't understand, that they want a better life in the U.S.

In my book Breathe And Count Back From Ten by Natalia Sylvestor it is about a young woman named Victoria who is about to go into her senior year of high school and has had  quite a bit of difficulty in life alone. She was born in Peru and moved to Florida. She has hip dysplasia and has had numerous surgeries to make it better and easier to deal with. She spends most of her time swimming in the pool at the complex she lives in or with her best friend Leslie, Her pain tends to lessen when she is swimming. Her parents don't really trust her anymore because of an incident with a guy over the summer. They also don't understand certain things that go on in America.
My book does talk about how Victoria's parents don't really understand the way that she acts, mostly her father. The quote to support that is when “That park put ideas in her head,”Papi said.”(Sylvestor 28). This quote shows the misunderstanding of his child because her father said that after she said she wanted to pretend to be a mermaid after the doctor added that swimming would be the only exercise that wouldn't bother her hip. He put her thought down like it didn't matter.

in my book Watched by Marina Budhos. Naeem is the main character and his parents are very strict about his academics. His parents own a beat down convenient store in the Queens, New York. They are from Dhaka, Bangladesh. They moved to New York before Naeem was born. Naeem lies to his parents about school like he is going to study with friends, even though he isn't Naeem is starting to get introuble in and out of school and not caring for his academics and putting it off. He is in the place where he will not be able to cross the stage at graduation. He will most likely have to do a summer program to get the credit. He knows if he tells his parents they will be very upset with him and probably kick him out. "My parents- I don't finish.... Mrs.D bites her chapped lips. I'm so sorry, Naeema. Really. You have to tell them"(Budhos 60) Naeem is scared to tell his parents and will be ashamed. His parents won't understand him.
