In The Leavers By Lisa Ko is about a young Chinese Boy named Deming from a city called Bronx located in New York. he lives in a small apartment with his mother and family friends who has a boy Deming’s age named Michael. His mother works in a salon and doesn’t come till night. Deming’s mother says she got a new job in Florida but he doesn’t want to move. Later on his mother does not come home  from work and disappears with no notice. Now that his mother has left him he stayed with the family Vivian, Leon, and Michael but they could no longer afford him because of  Leon moving to work in China and Michael, so Vivian put him in foster care and he  found a new family to live  upstate with, Kate and Peter Wilkinson. He then changed his name to Daniel Wilkinson and got adopted.

One quote from my book The Leavers,“By July Demings mother had been gone for 5 months. Ever since February day she disappeared he had been waiting for a sign that she’d come back, even a sign that she was gone forever.” ( Ko 35 ).  With no contact or information about Demings mother not knowing where she is or what she is doing or how she is doing he misses her more. He calls her on the phone but never gets through, he is worried and just wants to hear from her.

One quote from the TED talk I chose  from 3 questions to ask about your U.S Citizenship, “ I was born in the Philippines. When I was 12 my mother sent me to live with my grandparents.” (Vargas). Vargas' grandparents live in America who have U.S citizenship and are immigrants from the Philippines. Even though he moved to the states at a young age Vargas gets told that he should have come to America the right way.

Being away from your parents at a young age is hard but it can teach you how to be more independent. So my question is why is it important to have family support in the transition to a new place?

In my book Tj Powar Has Something to Prove by Jesmeen Kaur Deo, the main character Tj is very hairy, the people in american schools frown upon women having visible body hair and she faces the challenges of their judgment. Tjs predicament is whether she should please the society she has around her, or stay in touch with her culture and not worry about her body hair. Its important for her to have her family around during this time so they can support her, having multiple kids in a public setting telling you to change yourself can be very influential and damaging and her family can help her through those times and make sure that whatever she chooses to do makes her happy. "you know what I mean," Chandani says icily. "Your werewolf look in 6th grade wasnt exactly sexy." (Kaur Deo) This quote is an example on how the things her classmates say could casue her to change her looks, and how shes prettier now that shes shaved.

“It's important for her to have her family around during this time so they can support her.” How did Tj's parents support her? How did they help her with what she’s going through?

In my story Mateo, my main character had a hard time fitting in with his new classmates when he first moved. He was able to find people that where more layed back and didn't really judge him for who he was but instead what he wanted. He now has a group of friends that are all supportive of each other, and all enjoy doing theater, and things that he also enjoys.

In my story “Indivisible” by Daniel Aleman, there is a boy and a young girl that start the book by living with their family. Their mother and father own a corner store, and that is their source of income. Both of Mateo’s (the older brother) parents came from Mexico, while he and his sister Sophie, were born in the United States. This makes both of them American citizens but not their parents. One day when Mateo gets back from school his parents are not there and his sister is at a friend's house. Mateo later finds out both of his parents have been taken by ICE, and deported. Mateo goes to get his sister and brings her to their house to explain what has happened. So far in the rest of the story, it is about the struggles that they are both facing without parents to show them what to do.

There are many moments after Mateo’s parents get taken, that are difficult for him. Not only does he not have family support, he has a fear to tell anyone else what has happened because he might lose his little sister. On his first morning without his parents, he is stressed out and tired from no sleep but understands that he needs to calm down for his sister, in order to help her get to school. He says “ I need Ma to remind me that I feel too much, and that everything is going to be okay.” (Aleman 58) This quote helps show the children's hopes and the fact that it may not be a new place that he moved to but it is still a huge change and he really needs his family to support him.

I like how Mateo cares for his sister and doesn't want her to be taken away from him. However what if he had told others about what happened to his parents, would he get help from the people he told?

In my book Tj Powar Has Something to Prove by Jesmeen Kaur Deo, Tj is very protective over her cousin Simran just like how I assume Mateo is with his sister. Simran experiences lots of bullying and backlash which makes Tj upset and causes her to lash out at the people around her.
