The need for Family Reunification TED talk talks about the struggles that children and families face when they are broken. It shows the hardships and all of the issues that come with immigrant families trying to move to America and stay whole in the process. In the ted talk the speaker states ““The right to be with your family, to be loved and cared for by your family, exists because you exist. It is the right of all humans.” (Elizabeth Zion) By saying this she is explaining what families should look like no matter where they are from and that they should be whole.

In my story “Indivisible” by Daniel Aleman, there is a boy and a young girl that start the book by living with their family. Their mother and father own a corner store, and that is their source of income. Both of Mateo’s (the older brother) parents came from Mexico, while he and his sister Sophie, were born in the United States. This makes both of them American citizens but not their parents. One day when Mateo gets back from school his parents are not there and his sister is at a friend's house. Mateo later finds out both of his parents have been taken by ICE, and deported. Mateo goes to get his sister and brings her to their house and explains what has happened. So far in the rest of the story, it is about the struggles that they are both facing without parents, to show them what to do.

There are many moments after Mateo’s parents get taken that are difficult for him. Not only does he not have family support, he has a fear to tell anyone else what has happened because he has a fear of losing his little sister. On his first morning without his parents, he is stressed out and tired from no sleep but understands that he needs to calm down for his sister to help her get to school. He says “ I need Ma to remind me that I feel too much, and that everything is going to be okay.” (Aleman 58) This quote helps show the children's hopes and the fact that it may not be a new place that he moved to but it is still a huge change and he really needs his family to support him.

Who is your character's mentor or guide? What help are they providing? If your book doesn't have a mentor for the main character what would be the difference if they did?

In my book TJ Powar has something to prove, Tj struggles with societal differences between the two cultures, her friend becomes a school meme that makes fun of her body hair. In this book she does not have a mentor, if she had one I think it would be better for her so she can learn that you cant make everyone happy and just do what makes you happy. Her friend that gets bullied tries to talk to her about some of these things but Tj doesnt seem to fully understand and spends a lot of time and energy trying to please both of the cultures shes involved with.

In my book The Leavers by Lisa Ko similar and different things happened in my book. Polly Guo who has departed from her son with no contact for over ten years. She has no mentors and she has not told anyone that she has a son or has not talked about him since. Polly is able to call him but never answers his calls. So what if she did talk about him other others in her present life and in your book what if Tj spends more time with her friends so she can fully understand them.

So maybe if Tj was able to come the consensus of not being able to please everyone. She would be able to take her friend as a mentor for the friend group that she is in, in order to understand more about cultures.

In my book The Leavers By Lisa Ko A young boy named Deming whose mother had left him at a young age who is now 21, he never knew that she got deported and she didn't want to tell him. In my second part of the book it shows Demings mothers POV who  is a Chinese immigrant and her name is Polly Guo who worked at a nail salon in New York and now she is an English Teacher, she has never mentioned her son to anyone, not even to her husband. In my book the opposite happens, she has no mentor or guide. If she had one or if she didn't get deported I think she'd be much happier and wouldn't have to hide Deming from people from her other life.¨ It was to much of a lie to reveal too Young now, that I had a twenty-one year old son I'd somehow never mentioned before.¨  ( Ko 119 )

I also feel that if your mother in your story, had someone to look up to or to share with confidently. she would be more confident and be able to live a little more fuller then now. in my story my character Mateo is aware his parents are in the process of getting deported, I have found that his uncle has taken the role of mentor and helped him open up and be able to understand things better then before.
