In the novel Tj Powar Has Something to Prove by Kaur Deo, Tj Powar is a highschool student, her and her cousins become the target of a rude meme. Tj promises herself that she will stop waxing, shaving, and plucking her hair to prove to people that she can still be beautiful and confident while not being controlled by America's social norms. In the process she goes through many hard times including losing her boyfriend and having arguments with people close to her, as her story goes on she begins to wonder who she is really trying to prove wrong.  “The truth of it is that humans are ugly little creatures by our own standards, and no one’s immune to being human, although some of us try to hide it.” Kaur Deo, 265)

In the Ted Talk What’s missing from the American immigrant narrative, she talks about how economics can affect the lives of many immigrants, and how hard it was to say goodbye to the rest of her family when she decided to live for herself and create her own lives. She also talks about how society is putting pressure on immigrants to be and act a certain way.

Both the video and my books talk about how American society and expectations can be belittling to anyone who doesn't fully meet them, “But both of these narratives are flawed in the ways in which they dehumanize people if they don't fit within a certain mold or succeed in a certain way. And this really affected my self-image, because I started to question these ideas for who my parents were and who I was.” (Elizabeth Camarillo Gutierrez 3:49)

What societal differences does your character experience?

In my story “Indivisible” by Daniel Aleman, there is a boy and a young girl that start the book by living with their family. Their mother and father own a corner store, and that is their source of income. Both of Mateo’s (the older brother) parents came from Mexico, while he and his sister Sophie, were born in the United States. This makes both of them American citizens but not their parents. One day when Mateo gets back from school his parents are not there and his sister is at a friend's house. Mateo later finds out both of his parents have been taken by ICE, and deported. Mateo goes to get his sister and brings her to their house and explains what has happened. So far in the rest of the story, the parents are trying to make it to their court date and fighting to stay in the country for their children.

Towards the begging of my story Mateo deals with a societal difference in witch, he is trying out for a leas role in a play and instead of letting him try out they tell him that because of is skin color and culture he would be a good fit for this play, this really hurts Mateo's hope to find a job in the acting business and that shows throughout the rest of the story.

In My book “ The Leavers” By Lisa Ko is about a boy named Deming Guo and his immigrant mother named Polly Guo from China.  Deming and his mother lived in a shared apartment with Polly’s boyfriend Leon and his sister Vivian  who has  a boy named Michael Demings age.Polly works at a nail salon in New York to provide money but later found a Job in Florida and needed to move down for work but Deming did not want to leave and wanted to stay with Michael. One day Polly disappeared and never came back after work.Since Polly left and Leon went to work in China, Vivian could not afford to have Michael and Deming, so she gave Deming up for adoption and got adopted by a white family and changed his name to Daniel Wilkinson and moved upstate New york with his new family around the age of 10. Moving forward about 10 years later Deming is now 21 and he still doesn’t know where his mother had gone and haven’t had contact with her and with Michael since he had left. Michael had found his contact through email and wanted to catch up with him,  So he responded and met up with Michael and later with Vivian and Leon. When reuniting back with Leon, Leon gave out Polly’s number to Deming to get in contact with his mother. After getting her contact information he calls her but no one answers. In the second part of my book it leans more towards Polly’s POV. Since leaving the U.S. and being deported back to China she is now an English teacher and  has Never mentioned to anyone that she has a son, not even to her husband. Since finding out where his mom lives In the last part of my book Deming flies out to Fuzhou, China where his mom is now living to go and visit her while on a tourist visa for three months. Before he visits his mother, he goes to Leons house who is now married and has a daughter. Leon goes on and helps Deming to find his mother. Polly tells him the information of where she lives but not the exact location of the apartment. Once they meet up she finally tells him what happened to her and what they did to her. After being in China for a couple of months, Deming goes back and reunites with his adoptive family for the holidays.

In my book when Deming gets adopted his adoptive mom Kate is overthinking. She thinks that people are going to judge her because she has an Asian kid. Kate thinks that Deming won’t like living with them and doesn’t think it will be easy taking care of him. Before adopting Kate and her husband Peter have read a lot of books and did research about adopting that Deming has found when wandering around the house.

How old is Deming when he gets adopted? Does he have any doubts about what other people will think?

Hi ldorman25, Deming is around 10 when he gets adopted. When he found out his mother has left and for him to be adopted he started to think that he was not good enough for his mom. He also thought when getting adopted it was going to be temporary and not going to last long with them.

In my book Gabi, A Girl in Pieces by Isabel Quintero, it talks about a Girl named Gabi and her life as a Senior in high school being a bigger girl, having a beautiful but pregnant best friend, a gay best friend who just got kicked out, a meth addict dad, and a mexican mom. Through all these struggles and side problems for Gabi she still tries to overlook them. Gabi doesn't dwell on these problems or try to make them seem happier than they are. Throughout this book Gabi goes through even more struggles when her father overdoses in their garage. This has a big impact on Gabi and takes a lot for her to cope with her fathers death While still trying to please the rest of her friends and family.

Gabi has had to deal with lots of societal difficulties because she doesn't for the usual Mexican standards.  Gabi is an overweight pale girl and compared to her skinny tanned bestfriend she receives lots of comments.

Yes, but not good ones. Gabi gets comments about how she should look instead of how she does.
