	I agree with you about McCandless is a strong individual and that he is positive and high spirited. I think that if everyone had that kind of energy pretty much anything is possible. What McCandless did is a reflection of himself and what he believe in and I think his story shows how he was as a person and as a whole. If everyone had this dedication and drive to accomplish things we would get everything done that we have dreamed of. whats your dream ?? do you dream to travel??? 6 days ago By caust... I think that I agree with everything you say especially that he had his own journey was kinda close to McCandless and that shows the depth of the situation. I also think they are both willy nilly when it comes to being prepared and knowing what he is getting himself into. I think if Chris was fully prepared and willing to accept help he would be well off, but he came into the situation with knowing and that's not a good way to a accomplish one of your dreams. If I have a dream I'm gonna make sure I have everything I need to accomplish it and get it done the right way. Overall, I agree with you that Krakauer inserted himself into the story in an inappropriate way. I like that you mentioned that it felt like you were reading a book on Krakauer because that is very true. Even if Krakauer's interjection was imperative to the story, it didn't really need to be that long. I also think that you made an interesting point about Krakauer's narrative being insensitive to McCandless's family members. Krakauer is almost fangirling over McCandless and their similarities around this part of the book, and considering that McCandless was a real person who died during his journey, this style of narrative is unfitting. It may also be insensitive for Krakauer to discuss his own story because Krakauer lived and McCandless didn't, which is like salt in the wound for the family. Still, if Krakauer left all personal thoughts, opinions, and stories about other characters out of Into the Wild, the book would basically be just another news story. In a way, Krakauer's personal touches are what makes the book an actual book. Although his narrative didn't fit into the book well, his biases may add to it. Circling back to the comment about his family members, I think that it's interesting to wonder how this book affected them. More than likely, Into the Wild, brought a lot more attention to their family, even almost 30 years later. Krakauer published the book only 4 years after McCandless's death. If Krakauer had written the book a decade after McCandless's death, would it change the way it affects them? 	I agree with you, I also enjoy the little day-to-day things. I wouldn't be able to give up any of the activities to mentioned. If I had to choose, I would also give up money. I would rather still have my family and friends. Granted there are other things I'd rather give up completely, like social media. 2 weeks ago By dcust... I agree with you. I wouldn't be able to give up my phone and my life. I would also like to give up social media but at the same time I feel as though I would be left out of the loop. Deleting social media would definitely decrease drama and jealousy. Social media is a big factor of society in today's age, which is tough. Would there be a social media you would be able to give up? I agree that not having money would definitely be a big issue for a lot of people, but I think that it's interesting to think about people who may live completely without money. I don't necessarily think that not having money means you don't have anything. For instance, like most kids, I didn't have money for the first decade or so of my life, but I still had things. Of course, my parents had money which is why I was still able to live normally, so it's definitely different than Chris McCandless's situation, but kids do have that same sort of freedom from consumerism or capitalism (etc. etc.) like McCandless was hoping for. As such, having no money is not necessarily as unheard of as people may originally believe. Children are still functioning members of society, just without all of the independence that adults tend to have. Also, before money was a thing in the form of a cash currency, people bartered and traded and upheld full societies without the money that we are familiar with in modern day. 	I love the way you described the Christmas when you lost your bird. Although, I did not love that your bird flew away, obviously. Nonetheless, it felt like I was there on Christmas with you, watching the whole scene play out. Additionally, the growth you displayed from the first bird you had to the last bird makes me worry less about what the future has in store for you and your birds. I love your story because I was in a similar situation when I used to own birds. My parents did not want another dog, so they got me a bird instead. However, we were not a bird family. We did not know anything about birds, and my mum got the bird before doing research. The breed of bird we got was aggressive, so instead of getting rid of the bird, we got another one. Yikes! It went better because my mother did more research, however, in the end, we gave the birds away. It happens all too often that parents get kids pets they cannot handle. Most often, the parents are taking care of the animal, so if they cannot handle a pet, they should not get one. At the time, I was seven to eight years old when I got my birds; I could barely see over the counter. I find it odd that they expected me to take care of a bird when I could barely take care of myself. Is it fair for parents to get their kids a pet that they cannot handle? Is it normal to expect a kid to fully take care of a dependent, not including the monetary cost? 4 weeks ago By ssloa... Megan When I was 13 I begged my parents to get me a budgie, which is a parakeet. I got a white one and a blue one for Christmas that year. I didn't really know how to take care of them, all i knew was i just wanted it as a pet, like to sit and look pretty. They were always fet and had kept clean water for them, though I didn't really know how to handle them i just let them chirp amongst each other for the first couple of months. The white budgie liked me first, i had called them but i don't remember their names now. I had the white budgie basically trained to like being around people and there was a favorite spot it had which was to hang out in my hoodie pocket. \ Once it came time the next Christmas rolled around and I was 14, the day after Christmas I was with my mom doing laundry in the other room, and my budgie was in the Christmas tree, unsupervised, however, there were no dogs or little children in the house at the time so I figured she would be fine. However, my stepdad came in and opened the glass sliding door that goes outside to let the dogs go to the bathroom when he brought them from the garage, and out she flew to the trees outside, vanishing. I heard her outside and looked up everything I could do to try to lure her back in and it just wouldn't work. I stayed there until it was pitch dark still playing audios of budgie chirps and her cage full of food and special treats. Not a muscle was moved. About a year and a half later I convinced my mom to get me a cockatoo, and her name is Megan, we all take care of her and this time I actually know what I'm doing when having her in my care. My point of this story is that everyone wants something, even if you think you will be able to fully care for it, not everything will turn out the way you thought it would. My story in a way shows that i had ignorance towards animals i wanted as pets when i never did any research with them or keep them kept. 1 month ago By kdais... I really enjoyed hearing about your experience with getting Marty. Most kids at that age beg their parents for some type of pet and swear that they will do everything needed to take care of it but in reality, it usually ends up falling back on the parents to deal with, so I think this proves how you were better with responsibility than most kids your age. When I was younger I also I got puppies for Christmas, and it truly is the best gift. Having a pet that I can now do stuff with like car rides is so much fun because I can take her on trips to the store, stop to get her treats, and really do anything because she's just happy to be there. Although I didn't ask my parents for the puppies I did beg and plead for a kitten on my 15th birthday. I looked at so many websites trying to find the perfect fit for me and ended up finding the best match at the Androscoggin Humane society in Lewiston.
